The amount of information displayed depends on your friends privacy settings.
Live feed give you all the news stories such as status updates, the friends they have added or the groups they have joined.
Remember you may not want to know the moment a friend adds a photo but you may want to know the group they have joined or they have made a connection which is common therefore edit your feed setting using the preferences tab at the home page. The more fine tuned your preference is the less time you waste going through useless updates
